Pitch Please
Spring softball kicked off in fine fashion on a sun-drenched field at Irving Park on Sunday. The 10:30 game between Pitch Please and Pitches be crazy was a coming out party for Jennifer Strange, a five-tool player whose natural ability was on display both on defense and at the plate. Pitches be crazy quickly learned in the first inning left field would be shut down for the game with Jen making a couple of outstanding catches, covering the grass with her sneaky quick closing speed and sure hands with the leather.
Jen's knack for finding the open spot in the field while at the plate propelled her team to an impressive offensive display, with baserunners and runs in plenty of supply for the team in purple. A solid middle inning pitching stint sealed the deal that this will be a player to be reckoned with all season long.
Nice work Jen...your stellar all-around game will make it difficult for any team to take Pitch Please lightly this season.

Underhanded Compliments
Underhanded Compliments came ready to play and then some today with a doubleheader scheduled for Sunday. Leading the charge was Nicole Larson, a quiet player by nature whose prowess at the plate propelled her team to two victories and an impressive 51 total team runs scored this afternoon. Her bat spoke loudly all afternoon, with one key hit after another and a fine display of coming through when her team needed her the most. Rumors has it she will be moving up quite a bit in the batting lineup after a stellar afternoon crushing the ball all over Irving Park.
Nice work Nicole...stay angry at the plate my friend!

Pitches be crazy
The game of the day on Sunday featured Big Pink and Pitches be crazy, two quality teams who had the fans on edge from the first pitch. A concession stand run during this game was out of the question...this was a back and forth affair from the first inning, with both teams crushing the ball around Irving Park until the very last at bat. With Big Pink clinging to a 16-15 and two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, cool-as-ice Don stepped to the plate with two runners on base. Don did what he does best, smashing a 1-1 pitch to deep left center field and propelling his team to a hard-fought 17-16 victory.
Don "walk-off" Majkowski...a player teams may be pitching around for the rest of the season.

Heather had had a rough day at the plate on Sunday. That is, until her team REALLY needed her. Seemingly uncomfortable at the plate at times, she stepped into the box with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the 7th inning and her team holding a very slight lead. That's when her never say die attitude paid off. Heather smacked a ball the opposite way for a single that scored 2, increasing the lead and continuing the rally that eventually reached 11 runs and gave We've Got the Runs a 21-14 lead; a lead they held onto for a 21-15 win. Heather said after the hit that she wanted to retire. We hope she doesn't! She's a joy to have out there! Heather had a great attitude, even when getting out in previous at bats, and it was this "Keep on Truckin'" attitude that makes Heather this week's Player of the Week.

Toughed Out the Double Header
Shayan turned in a gritty performance on Sunday at Irving Park. His team had a double header and, very early on, in Game 1 he got twisted up at first base and ended up turning his knee. The injury clearly bothered him as he had inhibited motion with that knee in subsequent at bats. But that didn't let Shayan stop him. Downing about 4 Ibuprofens, Shayan gutted both games of the double header out and was staring to have a full range of motion in that knee by the end of Game 2. He got several hits and made some nice plays at first as well. It's gutsy performances like this which define the Underdog spirit. Way to go Shayan! You're this week's Player of the Week!
