The first POTW for Winter Midcore Thursday Night at Tubman goes to brand new mom, Elizabeth Shinkle! Just two months back from having her adorable daughter, Elizabeth showed no lack of energy or ability in her games tonight vs. Sets on the Beach. With her baby daughter and husband Austin cheering her on from the stands (OK, baby can't really cheer yet, but she did follow closely with her just-focusing eyes), Elizabeth showed off her Super Mom powers with some fantastic service and spiking ability at the net. Austin subbed in the second set to give her a break for a little bonding/feeding time with her newborn, then it was back to action in the third set with Elizabeth playing strong until the final winning point and match for Shots on Us. Congratulations Elizabeth - on both your POTW award and the new addition to your family!
Brew Balls has a secret weapon that they bring out when a kill needs perfect placement and that cannon is Drew Edwards. How he can zero in on the exact spot of the floor which eludes his opponent is truly a thing of beauty. The same can be said of his amazing service - bombs away! Only the strong of heart and body should attempt to return Drew's masterful serves. While Brew Balls conceded the first set to Shots On Us, they cruised to victories in the final two with Drew in the driver's seat. Looking forward to a great season of watching Drew and the Brew's fantastic teamwork every Thursday night at Tubman!
The ladies of High on Spikes are making it two POTWs in a row for the Winter Midcore Thursday night Tubman league! This week's honoree is Amy Johnson. Did playing with only four players matter to Amy? Heck no! She was a whiz and covered the court like she was two people - a body slamming dig here, a fantastic kill there, pinpoint service and always ready for the block at net. Amy's energy never let up over the three sets while encouraging and coaching her teammates all the way. Pretty great night for High on Spikes winning two out of three and securing another POTW for their team with Amy!
Sets on the Beach's performance on Thursday night at Tubman was such a team effort that it deserved a team POTW award. Mark, Amy, Amanda, Jeff, Linda and Cody played an incredible match vs. High on Spikes that ran like a well-oiled machine. The Sets seemingly read each other's minds as to where the next volley would come from and with sheer determination and elbow grease, were able to fend off some stiff competition from High on Spikes to sweep the match. The comaraderie and teamwork that comes from playing as a team for a long time really shows itself whenever Sets comes to play. Sorta like watching an episode of "Friends"....Way to win big Sets!
Welcome back Shane Eschman! Shane has missed the first few weeks of the Winter Midcore at Tubman on Thursdays due to a bad ankle sprain. The time off the floor made no impact on Shane's fantastic play judging from his energy and prowess in every aspect of the game. His teammates on Brew Balls seemed to feed off his determination and came together for wins in two well-executed games vs. the Gold Diggers. The height Shane was able to get on a few spectacular kills were impressive given the bum ankle. We're looking forward to seeing you back in action and on the road to recovery, Shane - well played!
Steven Novak's Double Play Powers Both Gold Diggers and Brew Balls
Gold Diggers (Indy Team #V12)
Just call Steven Novak Mr. Utility. After playing a spectacular match with the Gold Diggers vs. High on Spikes in the 715pm slot, Steven stuck around to sub on Brew Balls and continued his dominance on the floor, spurring BB to victory. Steven's been known to sub on various USL teams and often has to flee the gym to make it to the other side of town in time for games either with his main squad, the Gold Diggers, or filling in elsewhere. This volleyball maniac never seems to tire with boundless energy left in the tank to fly up the net for spikes and blocks and rack up points with his accurate serving. When does he have time to eat or sleep??? Of course, Steven has no time for these things as he's off to another game somewhere.....It's guys like Steven who make everyone around them better players. And for this, we proudly bestow this week's Tubman Thursday Night POTW to you!
At approximately 6'5", Evan towers above all opponents. Because of this height advantage, Evan is able to power his arms over the net for some incredible spiking with astounding accuracy. Just give him a decent set, and he'll take the charge from there. With his added wingspan, Evan can also easily cover a couple of positions on his team's side of the court, so there's very little he has to do to quickly get to the ball. Evan led M Team to a hard-fought victory in a quarterfinal game vs. High on Spikes and continued his spike-fest into a semifinal game vs. Brew Balls. Unfortunately, M Team saw their season end with a loss to Brew Balls, but the push they gave was impressive with Evan at the net reigning down his killing ability missive. Great season Evan and M Team!
Austin "AJ" Shinkle was a man on a mission at the Tubman Thursday Night Winter Midcore Championships, and that was to make sure he left with a USL champs wristband on his arm. AJ and his wife Elizabeth typically don't play every set together as they bring their adorable baby daughter with them each week and one plays while the other babysits. Since teammate Brandon is out with an injury, he gladly took the babysitting duties while Mom and Dad could take the floor together. AJ was masterful in the kill department and was key in the semifinal match vs. Gold Diggers with astounding power and placement. In the finals, Brew Balls had no answer for AJ's ability at the net as he blocked several would-be kills on defense. AJ and Elizabeth celebrated the championship with their Shots teammates and the baby promptly fell asleep from all the excitement.....thanks AJ - you rocked it!
