For those who aren't familiar with the sport, Ultimate (often called Ultimate Frisbee... but "frisbee" is aggresively trademarked by Wham-O) is a game that resembles a combination of football, soccer, and basketball... with a flying disc. 7 Players on a team throw the disc to one another in order to advance it upfield without taking any steps. The other team tries to prevent their progress by intercepting passes, or deflecting the disc to keep it from being caught. To score a point, a player must catch the disc within the boundaries of the endzone, much like a touchdown.

If you've already played some Ultimate, you know that when you combine this framework with a flying disc, you get a sport unique unto itself. Ultimate developes a great combination of running, throwing techniques, catching acrobatics at advanced levels, defense, and strategy that make it an exciting challenge to learn and improve one's skills, as well as the perfect workout. The ability of the disc to float in the air and take on different speeds of flight with different throws is quite unlike any ball based game, and allows for a much different use of space on the field. While it is a sport and can no doubt get competitive (particularly during high level play), Ultimate in its purest form is also one of the most relaxed sports in terms of atmosphere there is. Most games - competitive or otherwise - embrace the "Spirit of the Game," the idea that play and officiating should be controlled in good sportsmanship by the players on the field - no refs, umps, or agro attitdues required. It's a great fit for Underdog.

Our Ultimate leagues will be geared toward play at a recreational level. Players with little or no formal experience playing the game are absolutely encouraged to start with Underdog Ultimate. You'll have ample chance to learn the rules as you go and pick up the different throwing techniques that help make the game even more fun. Our supervisors will be versed in the sport and ready to help new players get familiar with rules and techniques. Players who are Ultimate veterans are also encouraged to play - the great thing about Ultimate is that it is fun regardless of the different experience levels are represented when everyone is out there to hang out and have fun. Having strong players involved who are willing to share their knowledge and enthusiasm is a key part for helping us toward our goal of building a strong league for all players. As the number of teams increases, we plan to establish multiple divisions to reflect different experience levels.
