Taking full advantage of his height (well over 6 ft.), "The Tall Guy", or Bjorn Ottosson of Torn Ligaments, made a very strong case for his Player of the Week title at Friendly House on Thursday night. Tall Guy earned this moniker from his Decent Fellows opponents as his net play dominated everything they could throw at him. His effective blocks and a couple strong kills led Torn Ligs to a 25-11 victory in the first set. After dropping the second set, Tall Guy/Bjorn regrouped the squad and went back to work on the front row to continue his incredible defense to win back service, points, and ultimately secure the third game and match. If you ever need anything out of reach, call on Bjorn!
The Friendly House POTW goes to Jodie Johnson of Sloppy Sets not only for her admirable athleticism, but for the natural coaching ability she possesses. Under her direction, Sloppy Sets works together as a formidable opponent. They know their positions on the floor and are ready for anything coming near them with an accurate assist, a powerful block and extra effort digging. When Jodie puts her goggles on, you know she means business, because behind that eyewear is a keen sense of court presence. After falling in the first set to Torn Ligaments, Jodie directed her squad back to a great win in the second game 25-22. With energy and momentum, Sloppy Sets fought a hard battle in game 3 and watched as victory slipped just out of reach by 3 points. But with Coach Jodie at the helm, there's no question the energy and drive will be there game after game win or lose!
This was my first time officiating Underdog volleyball, it was very enjoyable to watch. Someone who stood out to me the most for this week would have to be Bjorn. Torn Ligaments played great even though they had no subs to rotate. I could tell that Bjorn is a true team player, he works very hard while keeping a positive attitude towards both his team and the opposing. Bjorn has amazing spikes when standing in the front lines allowing for some serious points. However, what I admired most about Bjorn was the fact that he was very considerate with the way he played. After a few hard spikes he toned it down a bit by not spiking the ball as hard as he could when getting the opportunity. The game is competitive but is mostly about having fun and by backing off from the hard spikes I think that Bjorn was able to allow the other team to keep the volleys going and ultimately have more fun.
Yuh-Chi had a great game. And we love great volleyball here at Underdog. Her serves were on point. Her defense was impenetrable. But Yuh-Chi is player of the week because it looked like she had way too much fun on the court. Her team spirit was tops and she brought the fun to Friendly House. Thanks for a great week of Volleyball Yuh-Chi!
Ian and the Decent Fellows know their way around a volleyball net. Ian led the charge and was a one man antenna installing show. Once that was squared away, Ian crushed it on the court, cheering his team on, dominating at the net, and generally having a lovely Thursday of volleyball. Thanks for the on point Underdog team spirit, Ian!
An ace from behind the serving line, Timothy quietly helped lead his team, That What She Set, into the semifinals next week. He had a rocket that went 12 straight in game two for a comfortable win. In the front row he was right where he needed to be for some great hits. He even had a few one handed diving saves to keep the play alive. Great work Tim and team!
