Sunday may be the day of rest, but one member of The Base Booters toiled through sweat and tears just to get to the field in time to play some KICKBALL. With one minute remaining until game time, Catie Griesdorn dashed through the outfield with a 40 lbs. backpack and her beloved dog attached at the wrist. She sprinted into the team dugout and instantly started dropping weight. It only took Catie a minute to hand off her dog, strip off the pack, sign the waiver, put on the team shirt and made it out onto the field.
This may be the most zealous act by a kickballer in recent memory, especially in the first week. I can only hope that Catie's lust for team sports and devotion to the game are infectious. For honoring her commitment to the team, Catie Griesdorn has earned The Player of the Week Award. Congratulations!!
Welcome back from the bye week. It felt nice to get back out on the field and play ball. Week 2 had a mixed bag of games. As a whole, new teams made improvements from last game while veteran team performances were lackluster. The run for the championship title looks wide open.
That being said, one team captain came out to play on Sunday. She accounted for 67% of her teams offensive production. She also had a fantastic catch in left field that saved several runs from scoring. With this type of performance, Eve Hansen of Team "Canada?" has brought class and respect back to the term Player/Coach. Eve has additionally earned the Player of the Week Award.
Freedom today showed her true feelings about that big red rubber thing that people kick around a field for about an hour each week. With her team locked in a close game and Freedom out in right field, a fly ball was kicked her way and she sprung into action. Running towards the foul line and tracking the ball Freedom starts to let her feelings be known. With the words flowing from her mouth, a boisterous, "Oh no, please god no!" was heard by the entire field as she saw that she would be responsible for making the play. Fortunately, that fly ball to Freedom wasn't as deadly as once believed.
Sometimes it's not only your actions but your words that follow you in why you are selected as the Player of the Week. Julie is a prime example of why she's earned this honor this week. On a play where Julie was running down the first base line she made the unfortunate decision to run towards the white base instead of the safety base and a full-on collision followed with the first baseman. From all accounts it looked like Julie got the worst of it as it looked like she got caught in the jaw a bit. After taking a break and realizing everyone was just fine we started the game up again. Since it looked worse than the players involved said I decided to ask Julie one last time if she was sure she was alright. Low and behold she showed her sense of humor was still there by responding, "I thought I hurt him!" when it was clear to the rest of us that she should have been worse for the wear!
Underdog is all for dressing up and having fun during games but Canada? took it to a whole new level this chilly but sunny Sunday. There are some things better left unsaid about their attire on a website but obviously Canada? didn't mind wearing it in a fairly busy public park. They had at least half their team dressed up as Bond and for some reason James was no where to be seen! Leann Zullo went all out today with her "costume" which included having to get permission from her teammates when speaking. At one point in the game I asked a player on Canada? the real question of the day...how many players needed to go buy their costumes and how many already had them. The answer of course was they pretty much all had it already and bought little or nothing for this week's dress-up frenzy. Is this what really happens in Canada?

POTW: Meiling Kimmel
El Diablo Roboticos
Meiling's effort typified the El Diablo upset of #1 seed The Claw today. On a close play at 1st she sacrificed her face to get to the base and sparked the team to a huge 6-2 win over a very good Claw team.
