When you need some points to settle a deadlock, just bring in Steph Scarbrough of Sets on Sets on Sets. She'll clean up the aces and throw points on the scoreboard to ensure victory. She's a master at the service line, rarely missing an opportunity to take over on offense. The Sets were battling it out with Notorious Dig with the players outdoing each other on assists and saves. Steph contributed in a big way in those areas too, as she is just as good a setter as she is in command of her service. Give her an inch and she'll score a mile of points - all adding up to a 2-1 set victory for the Sets. Bam, Boom! Here comes Steph's serves!
After seeing JR's spinning ball serves, you'd think he could spin plates on a stick. 21 Bump Street's secret to delivering aces and unreturnable serves is on the loose and showing off an incredible style. JR starts by spinning the ball up in the air, then in a secret move that he can disguise by sleight of hand, delivers an overhand hit that continues the ball spin until it lands with a slam and thud on the opponent's side of the net. There is so much movement on this thing, you'd think it was in orbit. The Spinmaster left the court in shock and awe with everyone wondering what the heck just happened. What happened was - three wins in a row for 21 Bump Street and POTW for JR!
Jerell hit the floor tonight ready to play! He impressed everyone with his digs, spikes, consistent serves, and huge blocks. Man does that guy have hops! Jerell also had the best attitude, and although his team didn't take the win, they all looked like they had the most fun. Great job Jerell!
Steven has been around USL for many years, played and subbed on many teams, in various venues, on sand and hardwood, in thick or thin. Steven is definitely reliable, but even better, he's definitely skilled and has been a frequent recipient of the POTW honor over the years. The Bump Set Brews took on Sets on Sets on Sets in a great Midcore matchup at St. Charles with the intensity cranked up. Steven took his energy up to high gear and was a beast with kill shots over net that resulted in numerous defensive breakdowns. Especially impressive was his sliding one-arm dig that spiraled over to land perfectly on the inside of the line and out of the reach of the defender. That ability comes with playing the hundreds of games Steven participates in year after year. Dedication pays off and once again, another POTW is bestowed on Steven Novak!
Friends and teammates cheered on Erin Belisle on Thursday at St. Charles not only for her strong performance, but because it was a special evening for her - a birthday celebration. The fact that Erin showed up to play on her BD proves her dedication to the sport and her team. With a "Happy Birthday" banner hung on the sidelines by her peeps, Erin played a great part of 21 Bump Street's three-set and match defeat of Sets on the Beach. She celebrated by crushing it at net, pounding points from the service line and bumping her way to victory. A great night all around for the Erin - congrats and Happy Birthday from your friends at USL!
The Sets on Sets on Sets engaged in an epic battle on Thursday night at St. Chuck's with 21 Bump Street and front and center, middle and back was Rene Kaza to provide the non-stop defense. Adding to his wealth of talent, is the inane ability to create havoc on defense. he's not afraid of skimming the floor for a one-arm dig or using that limb for swings at net. Going point for point with 21 Bump Street, Rene led the charge with providing the Sets all the defense they could want with numerous assists and aforementioned digs that blew the mind. Long volleys continued in part because Rene never gives up. The games were close and even though the Sets ended up losing 3-0, they can be proud of their performance and skills and the fact that they have Rene for a teammate!

Josh Delivers for the DIGs
Notorious DIG
The intensity was huge for Notorioius DIG on Thursday at St. Charles with Josh Michalec leading the way. He sparked his teammates to victory in a lively exchange in the first game vs. Sets on the Beach. The 27-25 score in the first game reflects a mighty good performance by Josh, who led the way with flawless play. He had a hand in almost every touch and dazzled all with a few incredible saves. Josh really took off at the net, where he landed crushing kills on the defensive end. The DIGs were inspired by his intensity and gave their all in the 2-1 game match.
Just when it's needed most, Suzu Gottling of Sets on Sets on Sets delivers with the great underhand serves that are her specialty. Especially at playoff time, Suzu brings it from the line with accuracy and effect. Her crafty service lands wherever she wants it and puts the defense in puzzlement because she switches it up so much. Opponent Here for Beer were kept guessing all night and her sneaky attack produced a 3-0 set win, launching Sets on Sets on Sets into the semifinals next week. Cheers for Suzu's serves!
What a great game and season by Nicole. You’ll definitely want her on your team. She is ready to go after any ball, zooming across the court as the setter. Nicole encourages her team while on the court and when off of it. Opposing teams watch out because she’s got a killer serve. Great season Nicole!
