Welcome to summer league, football players! Wednesday night was an absolute scorcher, but all of our teams showed up and battled the heat. The game of the week was easily the matchup between Cheeseburger and Brock's Last Cuddle. These two teams have faced off countless times over the years and the games routinely come down to the wire.
Wednesday night was no different. The score was tied at halftime, but the Cuddlers did their best Golden State Warrior impression and game out of the break hot. A quick score and early interception gave them a 14-point lead; the Burgers battled back, but it was too little, too late. The teams traded scores, but the quick-strike offense early in the second half gave Brock's Last Cuddle too big of a lead to overcome.
Flaggin Ball Z looks like they did some serious training during the spring. They played last fall, then known as Mediocre Athletes*, and they were a very fun team, but they didn't record a lot of wins.
This week, they came ready to play. Stacked is a dangerous team with lots of tall receivers, but Flaggin Ball hung in there. The teams traded quick scores all game, but the difference was two interceptions. The upstarts snagged game changing INTs and locked down the victory.
The summer flag football season is setting up to be quite an experience. Instead of our traditional co-ed contenders running over everyone, we have seen a lot of parity. This week exemplified that.
Every team has now played three or four games, and no one has shown to be dominant, yet. One legitimate contender for that crown is Stacked. They have been impressive and put up the best performance of summer; they took out Summer Love, 64-40, in a shootout. Both teams are legitimate championship contenders, so for Stacked to win in that fashion is an impressive feat.
Defense wins championships--or at least games in the middle of July. cheeseburger pitched their first shut out of the season with a 36-0 victory. Even without several of their foundational players, cheeseburger continues to impress and busted out the best defensive performance of the season to move to the top of the standings.
Innate Flow has found its groove. Not only is that term something chiropractory, but it is also the name of our newest flag football team.
The group of chiropractic college students has taken to the underdog style. This week, they showed they are ready to run with our longest standing teams. Innate Flow faced off against cheeseburger--a tenured football regular--in a see-saw game.
cheeseburger looked like they sealed the win with a late rally, but an errant tipped pass turned into an interception and gave Flow new life. They drove down the field, punched in the go-ahead touchdown and ran down the seconds to secure their second win of the season.
Ashleigh was making plays all over the field Wednesday night. If I’m not mistaken she had 3 or 4 conversions caught, a couple TDS, and numerous sideline catches that would of made Antonio brown proud. Great job out there Ashleigh!
Sometimes you play perfect defense and still get beat. That's what happened to cheeseburger on two stunning touchdowns in their quarterfinal game.
The defender had pinned the receiver in the back corner of the end zone with nowhere to go. Both times, the defenders went up and tried to make a play on the ball, but with the athleticism and ups Jordan possesses, he was able to sky over everybody and high point the ball for two amazing touchdowns.
