He’s America’s “Shanghai Cricket”

Crickets, of the insect order Orthoptera are common bugs across many cultures. Related to grasshoppers, these insects are an important part of the ecosystem and culture. More than 900 species of cricket are known to man; they are often nocturnal and have similar body structures to grasshoppers. Crickets do best in warm climates and are most often found in dirt, fields, and hot places. They jump, chirp, and are nocturnal, so they're always prepared for predators or just frolicking through pastures and meadows.

Considered scavengers, crickets have a diet of organic materials. These include seed plants, plant material, fungal bacteria, and even other crickets. They are often used to feed other animals such as amphibians, snakes, and spiders. It is known that crickets can be aggressive, and due to the strength of their mandibles have even bit humans. Due to their strong hind legs, crickets can jump anywhere between 20 or 30 body lengths, making them an evasive insect to catch.
